Condensed matter research with photons, neutrons, nuclear probes and ion beams usually requires so called large scale facilities, i.e. large research institutions. That is because the particles or beams needed for the analyses can only be produced in large facilities: synchrotron radiation need accelerators and / or storage rings, neutrons are released by research reactors or spallation sources and ion beams also need accelerators.
