Condensed Matter Research at Large Scale Facilites

Insight into the structure of matter and into the fundamental relationships in nature is an essential component of our education and research. Basic research in physics plays an important role in this context, because it is the starting point for technical innovation and the sustainable development of the economy and society.

Condensed matter research with photons, neutrons, nuclear probes and ion beams usually requires so called large scale facilities, i.e. large research institutions. That is because the particles or beams needed for the analyses can only be produced in large facilities: synchrotron radiation need accelerators and / or storage rings, neutrons are released by research reactors or spallation sources and ion beams also need accelerators. An overview of the large scale research facilities that are relevant for research with photons, neutrons, nuclear probes and ion beams can be found on the BMBF-website "Landschaft der Forschungsinfrastrukturen".

Large scale facilities are an essential component of the research infrastructure in our country. The selectionis based on an intensive peer review process amongst others by the science council. Involving external experts leads to absolute to class large scale facilites.

Facilities are being built and run in consultation with the DFG by the Helmholtz Association (in the programme "From Matter to Materials and Life"), institutes of the Leibniz Association, the Max Planck Society and by international research organisation such as CERN, ESRF, ESO, ESS and ILL.

Research at large scale facilities is driven amongst others by research groups at German universities. This leads to an active and fruitful exchange between the operators of the facilities and the external user community, which results in the design of new types of experiments and innovative instruments and research methods.
