102. KFN meeting (with joint KFS/KFN meeting)

German Committee Research with Neutrons

Monday, Dec. 06, 2021, video conference

New KFN instrumentation prize: An "Instrumentation Prize Neutron Research" will be awarded for the first time at SNI2022.

RAC: The German-Swedish collaborative projects will start in April next year for a period of four years.

ErUM-Pro Matter: The new projects are to start on 01 July.2022, the review meeting is scheduled for March.

Reports from the facilites:

ILL: The H1H2 long shutdown operation of the ILL is fully on schedule.
MLZ: At FRM II, cold neutrons with reduced intensity and thermal and hot neutrons are available as usual. Since the intensity of the cold neutrons varies depending on the experiment, users should consult directly with the instrument managers when planning.
MLZ events: MLZ conference "Neutrons for Mobility" 31 May -03 June 2022; DGK annual conference in Munich with guided tour at MLZ 14-17 March 2022; MATRAC school 18-23 Sept. 2022 in Tutzing.
ESS: Helmut Schober has been Director General of the ESS since 01.11.2021. The new schedule foresees Beam on Target for 2026, with start of user operation on some instruments in 2027. The User Meeting ESS/ILL is planned for 05-07 Oct. 2022 in Lund, in person if possible.
LENS: The statutes of LENS have been revised. The next meeting of the Council, formerly General Assembly, is planned for February 2022.

KFN Neutron Strategy Brochure in English: The translation of the KFN Neutron Strategy Brochure is ready and will be published on the KFN website soon.

Dates: The next KFN meetings will take place on 21 March 2022 and 20 June 2022.

Joint meeting of KFN and KFS following the 102nd KFN meeting:

The last joint meeting of KFS and KFN was in Garching in autumn 2018. The two committees have a lot in common, so this is a good opportunity for exchange.

Transfer workshop: The KFS is planning a workshop on the topic of transfer between science and industry for the spring.

Digital transformation: The committees agree that digitalisation is becoming more and more important, and that making it meaningfully sustainable is a major challenge. This is why they are involved in the programmes of the BMBF (ErUM-Data) and the DFG (DAPHNE4NFDI).

ErUM-Data: In the Software and Algorithms campaign, networking is to be supported through interdisciplinarity. It is important to involve technologically strong areas (data sciences, computer science, mathematics) and companies, as well as the sustainability of the developments. The two-stage application procedure should make it easier to get started and help to facilitate many good ideas. A selection is made from both the pre-proposals and the full proposals. The call for proposals has received a high response.

The ErUM Data Hub has been launched on 01 Nov. 2021 and is to support and coordinate activities of education and training, knowledge and innovation transfer and public relations. Related positions have been advertised, see
The DIG-UM community started with a kick-off meeting in early November. The big launch event is planned for early January:

DAPHNE4NFDI: The kick-off meeting of DAPHNE4NFDI was on 01 December (see Jobs are being advertised (see and the first people have started. There is much to do and much to achieve. On the topic of data trust models, there will be a kick-off meeting on 15 Dec. 2021. It is important to address the community as a whole so that everyone can benefit. The website ( can also support this. There is a feedback form there, e.g. for contributions to the analysis software.

SNI2022 in Berlin: The conference website is online at (or
The programme structure is presented. The Call for Abstracts is currently being prepared. The schedule is announced on the website, it is still subject to minor changes. The abstract deadline is planned for April, after which comes the review by committee members. Notifications should be sent out before the Early Bird Registration deadline. Sessions and microsymposia will be 90 minutes each (6 x 15 minutes).

Public relations: In summer, the KFS published a press release on corona research with synchrotron radiation (see, and now research on climate change and the contribution of research with synchrotron radiation and neutrons to the energy transition is starting.

RACIRI: The next RACIRI Summer School is planned for 14-22 August 2022 in Varberg, Sweden. Participation is encouraged and is a special experience! The event connects countries and the X-ray and neutron communities, with a high quality of lectures.
