KFN email newsletter on June 10, 2021

Dear friends of neutron research,

ErUM-Data call for proposals published

The first call for proposals in the BMBF's new "ErUM-Data" action plan has now been published. Funding is available for collaborative projects in the field of "Software and Algorithms" for the exploration of the universe and matter (ErUM) with a focus on artificial intelligence and machine learning. The deadline for applications is Sept. 1, 2021. On June 24, 2021, PT dESY offers an online information event, see

The funding is primarily designed for interdisciplinary cooperation. The work is to be carried out in collaborative projects with the relevant players from universities, research institutions and commercial enterprises, so that powerful software and algorithms can be jointly developed and brought into use.

Prepare ErUM-Pro call for proposals

The call for proposals in ErUM-Pro (formerly Verbundforschung) is expected in late summer. There will also be an information event on ErUM-Pro, with the participation of the ErUM committees.

The Zoom Conference will take place on July 30,  2021 from 1 to 3 pm. The event is primarily aimed at young researchers and others who are planning a proposal for the first time. Did you know, for example, that you do not need to have a habilitation to submit a proposal? The calls for proposals will be explained and there will be an opportunity to ask questions. You can find more information at

The next RACIRI School is currently planned for 12-19 March 2022 in a ski resort in northern Sweden. A one-day online event (lecture and plenary discussion) is envisaged for summer 2021.

Reflectometry will be the focus of the "3rd Annual meeting of the Open Reflectivity Standards Organisation" (ORSO) next week (June 14-18, 2021), which will take place online. It will start with plenary talks, followed by presentations and discussions on data formats, standards, data analysis, education and outreach.

Helmut Schober and Andreas Meyer take on new tasks

Prof. Andreas Meyer is to become German Associate Director of the Institut Laue-Langevin ILL in Grenoble (France) on 1 October 2021. He will thus partly succeed Prof. Helmut Schober, who will join the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund (Sweden) as Director General on 1 November 2021. Both are proven experts in research with neutrons and have the interests of the users in mind through their membership in KFN. Congratulations!

With kind regards,

Frank Schreiber, KFN chair
Susan Schorr, KFN vice chair
Karin Griewatsch, KFN PR
