[kfn-info] Data management, Neutron Instrumentation and Innovation Award, RACIRI, LENS and deadlines (April 5, 2019)

KFN newsletter from April 5, 2019

Dear neutron users,

>>Data management

the KFN sees a great potential for neutron research in the planned investments by BMBF into data management. The FAIR-principle (Findability, Accessability, Inter-operability, Re-usability) will not only help data analysis, but also foster interlinking of research areas, institutions and countries.

We have reported earlier that the KFN is involved in plannung the new action plan ErUM-Data of the BMBF. Another ambitious programme is the German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI), which we sent our last email about on March 18, 2019. The KFN has contributed to the abstract "Neutron research data initiative" which aims at preparing an NFSI-consortium, and KFN-represantatives will take part in an NFDI-workshop in the middle of May, which aims at informing about and planning NFDI consortia. We persue a proposal for a joint consortium with synchrotron radiation. The NFDI call is expected for June, and also if you not involved yet, you still have the chance to join a consortium and take part in the proposal.

The call for ErUM-data is not expected before 2020, but since opportunies are quite complex, it is a good idea to start thinking about possible projects in your research area. Please feel free to ask us for information or contacts. Please contact the KFN chair Astrid Schneidewind, the vice chair Markus Braden or Klaudia Hradil, who is in charge of the digital agenda topic, see https://www.sni-portal.de/de/nutzervertretungen/komitee-forschung-mit-neutronen/das-komitee/mitglieder-1

>>The inaugural 2019 Neutron Instrumentation and Innovation Award sponsored by Mirrotron

The European Neutron Scattering Association has announced the inauguration of a new prize, the Neutron Instrumentation and Innovation Award. The prize will be awarded to an early career scientist or engineer in recognition of ground-breaking contributions in neutron instrumentation or method innovation, thereby enabling advances in neutron science and technology. This includes realization of new neutron instruments, pioneering of neutron science in new fields of applications, invention of new neutron techniques or development of new analysis methods and software, as well as other major contributions enabling advancement of neutron science. Early career typically means 3-10 years after a PhD, but both younger and more senior candidates may be considered. The prize amount (2'072 CHF) is generously sponsored by the company Mirrotron, a leading manufacturer of neutron instrumentation components. The Prize will awarded biennially (synchronized with the European or international Neutron Scattering Conferences).

The inaugural award of the Neutron Instrumentation and Innovation Award will be made at a special ceremony at the European Conference on Neutron Scattering (ECNS 2019), the 1st to 5th July in Saint Petersburg in Russia. The detailed guidelines of the Neutron Instrumentation and Innovation Award are listed on the ENSA web pages (http://www.neutrons-ensa.eu).

European scientists as individuals or on behalf of a Division, Section or Group may submit nominations for the 2019 Neutron Instrumentation and Innovation Award of the European Neutron Scattering Association (ENSA). Nominations should include a nomination letter motivating the award, a brief curriculum vitae of the candidate, a description or publication describing the nominated work. Letters of support may be included. Nominations for the Prize will be treated in confidence and although they will be acknowledged, there will be no further communication.

Nominations should be sent before 31st of May 2019 to the President of the Selection Committee, preferably by electronic mail in pdf format:

>>LENS (League of advanced European Neutron Sources) launches activities to strengthen European neutron science

Members of a strategic consortium of neutron research facilities in Europe, the League of advanced European Neutron Sources (LENS), officially launched activities to promote collaboration on neutron usage, technology development, innovation, data, education, and strategies last week. By aligning policies among its partners, LENS will advocate for the user community and strengthen European neutron science.

The consortium adopted and signed Statutes detailing the purpose of LENS. The Director of Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in France, Helmut Schober, was elected as LENS Chair, and the Director of the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source in the United Kingdom, Robert McGreevy, as Vice-Chair. The signing ceremony was followed by a public event that celebrated the launch of LENS in the presence of around 80 government representatives, national delegates to the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI), the European Commission, and the wider scientific community. Founding members are Budapest Neutron Centre (Hungary), European Spallation Source (Sweden), Forschungszentrum Jülich, Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum, Institut Laue-Langevin (France), Institute for Energy Technology (Norwegay), ISIS Neutron & Muon Source (UK), Laboratoire Léon Brillouin (France), Paul Scherrer Institute (Switzerland).
