KFN email newsletter on 25 August 2022

Dear friends of research with neutrons,

>> SNI2022

We, and especially the Berlin organisers, are in the middle of preparations for SNI2022, maybe you too? We look forward to informal exchange, discussions at the posters, shared meals and professional inspiration during personal encounters - finally! The Conference Book with all information about the conference, the programme and the abstracts of the contributions can be found here: https://www.helmholtz-berlin.de/media/media/spezial/events/2022/sni/downloads/sni2022-conference-book.pdf.

By the way: Post-deadline registration is still possible - please contact sni2022@con-gressa.de. All information on the conference is also available at www.hz-b.de/SNI2022.

The KFN and KFS committees will already meet the day before for the conference, partly together. In this composition, they will meet in person for the first time.

SNI2022 is also an opportunity to learn about developments at the facilities. The construction of the ESS is progressing, measurements can be done again at the ILL from January (proposal deadline 07 Sept. 2022), resumption of experiments is being worked on at full speed at the MLZ, and the ideas for the HBS in Jülich will enrich the neutron landscape and point the way to further compact sources. In addition, the handling of data is becoming more effective due to the stronger establishment of standards and technical developments such as artificial intelligence, and results are becoming even more transparent and accessible.

The potential of research with neutrons, synchrotron radiation and ions is made clear by the large number of important research results at SNI2022 - condensed in the public evening lecture, to which we cordially invite you:

> "Matter in the light of large-scale facilities: From Nanometres to Femtoseconds"
Speaker Frank Schreiber
Monday, 05 Sept. 2022, 7 - 8 p.m.

We are also looking forward to the reception on Tuesday evening at the Tipi am Kanzleramt and hope to meet many of you there!

The Monday of SNI2022 will also be dedicated to digitisation with two sessions (Digitisation/AI). Here, the activities in DAPHNE4NFDI and ErUM-Data will play an important role.

DIG-UM and ErUM-Data-Hub are also organising a workshop for which you can register until 29 August 2022:

>> Conceptual Advances in Deep Learning for Research on Universe and Matter, 12-16 Sept. 2022, Wiehl.

https://indico.scc.kit.edu/event/2853/overview

The workshop serves the professional exchange of young scientists who are members of the ErUM community. Concepts of Deep Learning and their future implications for the exploration of Universe and Matter (ErUM) will be discussed and explored.

>> Deuteration Network (DeuNet) survey ends today!

The Deuteration Network (DeuNet) is conducting a survey to learn more about the use of deuterated materials in scientific research using neutron and other techniques and applications now and in the future. It will run until 25 August 2022:
