[kfn-info] Funding guidelines for digital transformation

KFN email newsletter on Nov. 09, 2020

Dear friends of research with neutrons,

Within the framework programme ErUM
the BMBF is planning the publication of the new "ErUM-Data" action plan later
this year

A funding announcement will then be published. We would therefore like to call
on you to prepare for the expected BMBF-funding guideline for ErUM-Data for
the digital transformation by forming interdisciplinary cooperations.

The objectives and procedures will be defined in the funding guidelines
announced. The technical focus will probably be on developments of software
and algorithms with focus on artificial intelligence and machine learning. The
interdisciplinary cooperation on the different areas of ErUM (research on
universe and matter) - but also by including other participating disciplines
such as mathematics, computer and data sciences - shall be strengthened to
jointly develop the relevant research infrastructures from a digital
perspective in a sustainable way.

The German Committee for Research with Neutrons (KFN) has accompanied the
development of the funding programme in close cooperation with other user
committees involved. The KFN is convinced that the digital transformation is
of central importance for the future of research with neutrons. The
recommendations of the ErUM committees were published in 2019 and can be read

The ErUM-Data programme is independent of the NFDI programme of the DFG, for
which some of you participated in the DAPHNE4NFDI project proposal (DAta for
PHoton and Neutron Experiments). The planned development of metadata standards
and catalogues are complementary to projects in ErUM-Data.

We will inform you about the publication of the funding guidelines in a future
email newsletter.

If you are interested and need further information, you can contact Astrid
Schneidewind (, KFN chair), Klaudia Hradil
(, KFN-department digital agenda) or Tinka Spehr-
Bechmann at the responsible project management agency (tinka.spehr-, PT-DESY).

With best regards,

Astrid Schneidewind, KFN chair
