BMBF strategy meeting: The BMBF's prisma strategy meeting at the end of April 2021 was about preparing the call for proposals in ErUM-Pro. It was a very constructive discussion. The recommendations of the KFS were discussed.

Opinion article: In the June issue of the Physik Journal, an opinion page of the KFS was published under the title „Licht für die Zukunft – Die Forschung mit Synchrotronstrahlung bietet vielfältige Perspektiven“.

Corona research: The KFS is preparing a press release with the working title "Synchrotron light sources accelerate corona research".

RACIRI: The next RACIRI School is currently planned for March 2022 in northern Sweden. A one-day online event (lecture and plenary discussion) is planned for summer 2021.

ErUM-Pro: The BMBF call for proposals in ErUM-Pro (formerly Verbundforschung) is still being coordinated. One innovation will be the inclusion of commercial enterprises as partners in collaborations. In the event of delays in ongoing projects due to the pandemic, applicants are encouraged to apply for a follow-up project instead of a comprehensive extension of the project duration. Based on the old application, reasons should be given for what has been postponed and needs to be made up for. Extensions should not exceed 6 months. The application deadline in ErUM-Pro will be 01.11.2021. The call for proposals is expected in late summer. A Zoom workshop is planned for new applicants on 30.07.2021 (13-15 h). Young researchers with a doctorate are eligible to apply if it is supported by the respective university. If you have any questions, please contact the project management organisation DESY.

Reports from the facilites: At all facilites, the protective measures to prevent infection with the coronavirus have been effective. The users have accepted many restrictions for this. The advantages of the virtual user meetings will also be used in hybrid events in the future. Intensive research on the coronavirus and other aspects of the pandemic continues at all centres.

The HZB user meeting will be held as a hybrid event on 08 and 09.12.2021, with subsequent workshops on 10.12.2021. The new HZB facility spokesperson, Antje Vollmer, also chairs the LEAPS task force, from which a statement on "Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Anti-discrimination" (I.D.E.A.) was published. A workshop is planned for mid-September to coordinate the planned ErUM projects with HZB and, if possible, with each other.

There will also be a workshop on coordination in ErUM-Pro at DESY. The "Centre for X-ray and Nano Science" (CXNS) will be ready for occupancy in the next few days. For the "Centre for Molecular Water Science" (CMWS), a white paper is ready for printing.

At the ESRF, the new machine (ESRF-EBS) is running very stably. Last autumn, a data strategy was developed, which will now be adopted. Three new beamlines will be commissioned in autumn 2021, with more to come later. This will bring the ESRF source closer to full operation again.

HZB and DESY are planning upgrades of their sources (BESSY III and PETRA IV). The joint strategy is presented and discussed.

At the European XFEL, the next call is planned for autumn 2021. The hRIXS spectrometer was commissioned and the Helmholtz International Beamline for Extreme Fields will be inaugurated in autumn. Self-seeding in the SASE2 beamline and two-colour capabilities in SASE3 are available, and user operation is being prepared for both. The guest house is ready.

Full beam operation is running at the KARA storage ring of the KIT synchrotron. In January, the X-ray microscope for the KIT's HIKA experiment station, which is currently under construction at the PETRA III storage ring, was placed at P23 through the hall roof at PETRA III. The HIKA experiment hut is currently under construction.

ELBE: Prof. Peter Michel and Dr. Pavel Evtushenko from HZDR present ELBE and DALI, the planned successor machine to ELBE. ELBE is a superconducting linear accelerator at HZDR that operates at 40kW in full CW mode. It offers a wide range of applications. The ELBE electron beam can be combined with a high-power laser. Terahertz and infrared radiation are important for nanomaterials, bremsstrahlung for nuclear and astrophysics, positrons are used for materials research, pulsed neutrons are used for nuclear data and for the development of detectors. Electrons are used for research in cancer therapy and for materials research, among other things. A unique feature of ELBE is full CW operation at high pulse energy and high repetition rates. High electric fields that are well and flexibly time-structured are important for time-resolved experiments. In addition, spectral decoding of a THZ pulse can be used to determine its arrival time at the sample in the range of 10 fs (off-line analysis). Currently, DALI is planned as a further development of ELBE. Although it will cover a similar wavelength range, it will achieve significantly higher pulse energies and enable pump-probe experiments with THz pump and VUV sample. The radiation of this HGHG-FEL would be completely coherent, with continuously adjustable wavelength and polarisation.

PUMA: Harald Reichert presents the "Publication & User Experiment Metadata Analyser" of the ESRF. The project is a further development of a precursor at ILL. The software package is primarily intended for administrators and managers.

Digital Transformation: The final decision on the DAPHNE4NFDI application is expected in July. The ErUM-Data call is expected in early June. ErUM-Data outlines should be submitted by Sept. 1, 2021, the project start should then be July 1, 2022. As a continuation of the community workshop in January 2021, there will be an exchange platform to help form consortia. On June 24, 2021, there will be an information event on the application process in ErUM-Data.

Industry/Transfer: Industry and transfer is an important aspect for users, facilities and the BMBF. Bernd Hinrichsen from the KFS department "User Affairs and Industry" gives an overview of the activities of the facilities in this area. The KFS is discussing the topic and will continue to do so in the future.

Dates: The 109th KFS meeting will take place on Sept. 10, 2021.
