[kfs-verteiler] New KFS chair, data projects, call for highlights, survey and dates
Dear colleagues,
KFS chair elected
The new Committee Research with Synchrotron Radiation (KFS) has elected Prof. Dr. Jan-Dierk Grunwaldt (KIT) as chair and Prof. Dr. Sarah Köster (University of Göttingen) as vice-chair at its constituent meeting.
Together with the other elected members Prof. Dr. Taisia Gorkhover (Instrumentation Department), Prof. Dr. Christian Gutt (Digital Transformation Department), Prof. Dr. Birgit Kanngießer (User Affairs Department), Prof. Dr. Dirk Lützenkirchen-Hecht (Public Relations Department), Dr. Bridget Murphy and Prof. Dr. Andrea Thorn, the two will represent your interests as synchrotron radiation users over the next three years. In dialogue with representatives of the research centres, the project management agency and the BMBF, the KSF continues to develop strategies for the future and to promote the research field.
Cooperation with the KFN
In recent years, close cooperation has developed with the Committee Research with Neutrons (KFN), especially for the digital transformation. The KFN was also newly elected, here the new chair is Prof. Dr. Frank Schreiber (University of Tübingen) and vice-chair is Prof. Dr. Susan Schorr (HZB/FU Berlin).
Committee brochures
Both committees have published their recommendations and the respective Science Case this year in brochures, which you can find on the websites:

Preparation of the BMBF call on overarching digitalisation projects
On January 18 and 19 2021, a webinar on the preparation of the BMBF's ErUM-Data call will take place (18.01.21 14:00-17:30, 19.01.21 09:00-11:30). Project proposals on the two focal areas of machine learning and AI must be prepared in good time, not least because overarching and interdisciplinary networks are to be formed. The project goals should involve several communities and include researchers from the fields of mathematics and computer science. Beamline or experiment-specific software will continue to be funded through ErUM-Pro. Please register until January 17, 2021, at: https://indico.desy.de/event/28330/
Request for highlights from research
At the beginning of next year, the KFS will prepare its recommendations for the next BMBF "collaborative research round" (ErUM-Pro) with an expected application in autumn 2021. For this purpose, we ask you to send us scientific highlights from previous BMBF projects, which will be published on the KFS homepage and can be included in the strategy discussion. We envisage a half-page text with an illustration, or a finished press release. Please send them by January 18, 2021 to Karin Griewatsch, kfsadmin@sni-portal.de.
Survey on the KFS election
We have asked all eligible voters to take part in a short survey on the KFS election - especially those who have not voted. Thank you to all who have already participated. If you haven't got around to it yet - it's really quick and we look forward to hearing from you: https://www.sni-portal.de/en/user-committees/committee-research-with-synchrotron-radiation/users/kfs-survey-regarding-the-election?set_language=en
Christmas greetings
The KFS wishes you a Merry Christmas and a happy, successful and above all healthy New Year!
