Survey: What do you need for your research with synchrotron radiation? (Dec. 18, 2018)

KFS newsletter on Dec. 18. 2018

Dear Colleague,

I request your cooperation with the attached survey. This survey is very
important for the future of photon science research in Germany and the results
will be considered for our future KFS strategy. Your answers will help us to
show the research funding agencies where photon science is currently focused
and where the focus will move to in the coming years. It will take about 5 to
10 minutes to answer the questions.

Book vouchers

Since it is Christmas time, we will offer three 50€ book vouchers. One each to
the 20th , 200th  and 2000th participant. The winners will be notified by

All scientists working at institutions in Germany who are actively using
synchrotron radiation as well as scientists of German nationality who work
abroad at international institutions with German contribution are eligible to
participate. Group leaders, please encourage your postdocs and eligible
students to participate.

Do you have any colleagues who are not currently registered as users with KFS
but who could take part? If so, please forward this email to them!

The survey consists of 14 multiple-choice questions on your research: your
status, systems, energy, sources, scientific field, social or economic
challenge, methods, beam properties, sample environment, time scales,
infrastructure, data management, restrictions and future.

All large synchrotron radiation sources are planning upgrades, whose
instrumentation is still being discussed. We want to make sure that all
methods are taken into account to an extent that corresponds to your needs. We
also want to make the full range of Photon science research areas visible and
include it into our arguments in research policy.

We will present the results of the survey to you online, and also at the
upcoming user meetings. Further, we will discuss them with the BMBF and photon
science facility management teams. The results are also important for our
strategy brochure, which is in preparation.

As early as possible! To give us time for the evaluation, we ask you kindly to
take part latest until Dec. 31, 2018.

Data security

The survey is part of the new, encrypted KFS plone website, which offers your
data very good protection in the data center of Kiel University. You may have
noticed already that the website is still under construction, it will be
complemented bit by bit.

Thank you!

We would like to thank all participants and are excited to see the results.

With best regards,
Bridget Murphy, KFS chair
