Invitation to ErUM-Pro Match-Making-Workshop (FLASH & PETRA III)
Dear colleagues,
The call for proposals for the upcoming round of ErUM-Pro (formerly "collaborative research") should be published in the next few days. This funding instrument, which is unique in the world, offers excellent opportunities to link university research with large-scale research institutions.
For ErUM-Pro applications, it is helpful for applicants to consult with potential partners, the user community and with the operators of the large-scale instrumentation prior to submission to ensure that the necessary prerequisites are in place and that productive continued operation of the instrumentation is guaranteed after the funding expires.
To support this coordination process, DESY Photon Science, in coordination with the Committee Research with Synchrotron Radiation (KFS) for the two radiation sources PETRA III and FLASH, invites the interested research community to a 'Match - Making' workshop (video conference) on 16 and 17 September 2021. At this workshop, the operators of the radiation sources will present their development and expansion strategy for the coming years. Furthermore, applicants and user groups will be given the opportunity to present their ideas for instrumentation proposals and to coordinate these with the radiation source operators and, if necessary, also with each other.
If you would like to participate in this workshop, please register by 10 September with:
https://indico.desy.de/event/31169/
The detailed programme of the workshop will then be compiled depending on registrations.
The following programme is planned:
Thursday Sept. 16
09:00 - 18:00 : PETRA III
Friday Sept. 17
09:00 - 12:00 : FLASH
13:00 - 15:00 : Match-Making in separate Breakout - Rooms
If you have any questions, please contact christian.schroer@desy.de for PETRA III and rolf.treusch@desy.de for FLASH. We are looking forward to a lively participation.
With best regards,
Edgar Weckert

Helmholtz Photon Science Roadmap 2021
Three research centres in the Helmholtz Association have developed a joint future plan for the research conducted at the scientific light sources they operate in Hamburg, Berlin and Dresden. The upgrades proposed in the strategy for their world-class accelerator-based facilities will strengthen Germany as a research location and promote innovations in many different fields. A summary of the national strategy for the further development of accelerator-based light sources is provided in the brochure „Forschung und Innovation stärken“. The long version is "Nationale Strategie zur Weiterentwicklung beschleunigerbasierter Nutzereinrichtungen für die Forschung mit Photonen und mit hohen elektromagnetischen Feldern". [more] |

2nd Action Plan ErUM-Data Community Meeting
![]() |
A second webinar on the preparation of the BMBF's ErUM-Data call will take place on 01.07.2021 2021 (8:30-16:00). The aim is to discuss the BMBF's AI&ML call with a view to finding partners and consortia. Impulse lectures and discussion time are planned. This meeting complements the meeting organised by PT-DESY on 24.6.2021 on proposal submission. [Link for registration] |
ErUM-Data call published
The first call for proposals in the BMBF's new "ErUM-Data" action plan has now been published. Funding is available for collaborative projects in the field of "Software and Algorithms" for research into the universe and matter (ErUM), with a focus on artificial intelligence and machine learning. The deadline for applications is September 01, 2021. There was an online information event of PT DESY on June 24, 2021. [Information of PT DESY] [Announcement Bundesanzeiger] |
Application advice ErUM-Data and ErUM-Pro
Two dates to note for applicants in ErUM-Data and ErUM-Pro: The project management organisation DESY is offering a virtual information event for the ErUM-Data funding measure on June 24, 2021 (10-12 h). There will be a similar event on ErUM-Pro with the participation of the ErUM committees on July 30, 2021 (13-15 h). Did you know, for example, that you do not have to have a habilitation to submit an application? The calls for proposals will be explained and there will be an opportunity to ask questions. The event is primarily aimed at young researchers and others who are planning to submit a proposal for the first time. Further information will follow. Action Plan ErUM-Data published
The BMBF has published the action plan "ErUM-Data - from Big Data to Smart Data". The aim is to make greater use of the great potential of digital solutions from basic research in order to continue excellent research in the future and to meet social challenges at the same time. To this end, the action plan defines measures in the three overarching thematic fields of "Research Data Management", "Federated Digital Infrastructures" and "Software and Algorithms". It is important that researchers work together on an interdisciplinary basis, i.e. from different areas of ErUM (Research on Universe and Matter) and from different disciplines, such as physics, mathematics, computer science and data sciences. DAta from PHoton and Neutron Experiments
The aim of the national research data infrastructure (NFDI) is to systematically manage scientific and research data, provide long-term data storage, backup and accessibility, and network the data both nationally and internationally. The NFDI will bring multiple stakeholders together in a coordinated network of consortia tasked with providing science-driven data services to research communities. In mid-October, the neutron and synchrotron communities have subnitted a proposal for an NFDI consortium ("DAta from PHoton and Neutron Experiments") to DFG.
